Jamaica is an island rich in culture and history, much of which can still be noted in the architecture of the old cities and towns that dot the island. English rule of the island lasted for almost 300 years in which time two capital cities were created. The first, the pirate haven of Port Royal was destroyed by an earthquake and preceded by Kingston, which remains to this day the capital of the island. Kingston and the surrounding towns are home to some beautiful architecture including the oldest cathedral in the western hemisphere. There are a number of museums of interest in the area too, including the National Gallery of Jamaica and for music aficionados, the Bob Marley Museum.

Jamaica is an island of beautiful vistas that look out over majestic mountains, white beaches and incredible blue waters. Nature entwines effortlessly with busy towns and cities and there are numerous nature reserves and parks open to exploration. The Blue Mountains offer views that stretch the entire breadth of the island, sometimes reaching as far as Cuba, some 130 miles away. Jamaican cuisine encompasses the flavours, spices and techniques of all the past settlers of the island, including the British, Spanish, Africans, Chinese and its indigenous inhabitants. Jerk is the most common cooking technique, and is inherently popular throughout Jamaica and also on many other Caribbean islands. Restaurants and bars around the island offer a superb mix of Jamaican, Caribbean and International cuisines. Some dishes to look out for include the famous grilled Jerk Chicken, Goat Curry and Jamaican Patties - a savoury pastry not too dissimilar to a turnover but with added turmeric to create a golden yellow shell.
