El Chalten Highlights

  • El Chalten isn’t called the trekking capital of Argentina for nothing; it boasts a wide network of trails that can be found around the base of Torre and Fitz Roy. Hiking can be enjoyed in the region throughout the year, and in winter certain trails, such as Laguna Capri, can be crossed wearing snow-shoes, or alpine trek skied. Weather in El Chalten can be quick changing so make sure you take extra layers of clothes with you during a day’s hike just incase.
  • Horse riding is another popular pastime and the most common trail is on Cerro Fitz Roy. During a half-day track you can expect to see spectacular views of the national park, dense forests and fascinating wildlife. Another popular option is Valle del Rio de las Veultas which offers a three-hour ride following the meandering course of the river.
  • To enjoy stunning views of El Chalten’s frosted mountains and forests, a canoe or kayak excursion is highly recommended. Excursions of this type are normally available from October to April.
  • During the winter months El Chalten takes on an entirely different quality with visitors taking to their skis to enjoy cross country and alpine trekking. Many don snowshoes to journey to Chorillo del Salto where there is the possibility of ice climbing and skating on frozen lagoons.
  • Sampling the local food is a must, and during the summer months El Chalten is well served by an impressive number of restaurants. Keep an eye out for Argentinian specialities such as parillas, empanadas and Patagonian lamb. Most restaurants only open from October to April.
