Salzburg is a beautiful city, north of the Alps with a UNESCO recognised Old Town or Alstadt. The city is built along the banks of the Salzach River, north of the Alps which means that Salzburg is located within very scenic surroundings.
The name Salzburg means Salt Castle. Salt was carried in barges down the Salzach River from the mountains for many centuries, and today just outside of Salzburg, you may visit Salzburg/Bad Duerrnberg Salt Mines. Families young and old will enjoy dressing in traditional miner’s uniform and disappearing into the depths of the salt tunnels!
Boasting one of the best preserved city centres, Salzburg’s Old Town has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for over a decade.
Situated to the west of Austria, Salzburg is the country’s fourth largest city and renowned for its baroque architecture. The birthplace of Mozart, Salzburg is also where the film The Sound Of Music was filmed with Julie Andrews.
