It’s not easy finding the time to get the info on new destinations, so here are some insider tips for your Bulgaria holidays.
Haggling is common in the markets, although not in food shops or restaurants. Try to lower the price to about 10% of the original price, although if you’ve had a few, make this at least 25%. If small trinkets are your thing, there are plenty of hand-carved wooden souvenirs around.
If you want lasers and world-class DJs, head to Dance Club Mania in Sunny Beach and find all the foam and glow sticks you could ever need. If you want some culture, try some Rakia. This is the national brandy, and since home brews of this drink are around 60% alcohol, it’s a pretty good job that the food is cheap.
The Rila Monastery is hidden away in the mountains, which is perfect if you want to be around fewer British tourists and more Bulgarian monks
In the resorts you’ll never be far from a ‘Three Lions’ pub, which will be easy to spot amongst the dizzyingly long and complicated Bulgarian shop names. However, if you are looking for some authentic Bulgarian cuisine, say no to the burgers and try one of the meaty stews or even a mish mash which is actually a Bulgarian omelette.
