Discover Phnom Penh
Lying at the confluence of the rivers Mekong and Tonle Sap, Phnom Penh occupies an important strategic location, and has long been a melting pot for rich cultural influences. It is a fascinating city, which has been through much hardship to emerge today as a tourist destination ever growing in popularity. From the busy streets filled with tuk-tuks and market stalls, to modern attractions such as nightclubs and casinos. Visit Phnom Penh with an open mind, and you’re sure to be surprised at every turn.
- One of the main attractions on a holiday to Phnom Penh is the beautiful riverside area, known locally as Sisowath Quay. Here on the bank of the Mekong you’ll be able to experience a beautiful series of well-tended lawns, courtyards and palm-lined boulevards. This area is also a great place to head for a meal out, and you’ll find some of Phnom Penh’s more upmarket cafés, bars and restaurants located along the riverfront.
- One interesting site to visit during your holiday to Phnom Penh is the historic Tuol Sleng Prison. It’s a somewhat macabre experience, but an important one nonetheless; in the 1970s more than 14,000 inmates were tortured here under a cruel political regime; only eight of them made it out alive. Not for everyone but a very interesting and educational trip.
- For more of an overview on the history of Phnom Penh, then the National Museum of Cambodia is an important site to have on your list. Here you’ll find a wide range of exhibits, dating back to Cambodia’s ‘golden age’, and even further, to a number of cherished prehistoric finds.
