Santa Maria Holiday Information
The third largest “city” in Cape Verde, Santa Maria is in fact a pleasant small Portuguese style fishing town located in the southern area of Sal Island. A flat dry area (up to one metre above sea level), Santa Maria boasts a glorious soft white sandy beach which stretches for miles, a good assortment of accommodation, restaurants, bars, shops and a few banks, as well as a popular harbour area.
The atmosphere when on holiday in Santa Maria is very relaxed as visitors enjoy the warm tropical waters and superb amenities. The famous old lighthouse stands south of Santa Maria which can be reached by an unpaved road.
Sal Island’s capital of Mindelo is just 12 km north of Santa Maria and it is here where about 96% of the island’s population lives. The terrain to the north of Sal Island around Mindelo is mountainous compared to the flat south. The interesting village of Murdeira is just five kilometres from Santa Maria and definitely worth a visit.
