Caribbean insider tips
The perfect place to come to experience some serious rest and relaxation, there's a lot more to the Caribbean than picture-perfect beaches and rum soaked nights. Check out lowcostholiday.com's insider tips to get the most out of your Caribbean holiday.
When is the best time to go?
- The busiest time of year is during the months of December to April. Expect beaches, services and hotels to be full to bursting as thousands of tourists flock from grey British winters to the hot, sunny weather of the Caribbean. From July to August more humid weather and tropical storms make the islands less-visited, but you can pick up some great deals on accommodation and still enjoy a fantastic week in the sun.
Caribbean nightlife
- Depending on which island you visit, nightlife in the Caribbean can be anything from all-night partying to romantic candlelit dining on the beach. Places like Jamaica are famous for their reggae music parties, while Aruba is renowned as a top entertainment destination with glittering casinos and amazing live shows on offer all night long. On the quieter islands more popular with honeymooners and families, the evenings bring plenty of opportunities to enjoy delicious local cuisine, listen to live music and enjoy cocktails under the stars.
Hidden gems of the Caribbean
- Escape the hustle and bustle of the busy resorts and take a boat tour exploring the sights of some of the Caribbean's uninhabited and undiscovered islands.
How's the shopping?
- You can pick up local produce like rum for a fraction of the price in the UK and get some great bargains on duty free goods. You'll also find many local artisans crafting unique souvenirs like jewellery, artwork and more.
Where can I get a burger?
- Eating out in the Caribbean features everything from cheap and cheerful local food to high-end gourmet cuisine with just about everything in between. While some of the major resorts feature recognisable chains, you'll get the best bargains eating fresh seafood and specialities like jerk chicken in the local cafes.
Get in with the locals
- The locals in the Caribbean for the most part are friendly, open and eager to share their knowledge. Try asking around for the best tips on where to go and what to do.
Can I drink the water?
- In some places it is OK to drink, but to stay safe we recommend sticking to bottled water.
What's the 999 number?
- The emergency services number varies from island to island; please ask your hotel for further details.
Shall I pack the sunscreen/anorak?
- The Caribbean is hot and sunny all year round, but there is always a chance of showers. Pack a lightweight raincoat to make sure you stay dry.
How do I get around?
- Taxis and water taxis are the most common way to travel around resorts. Most islands also have local bus services providing a cheap way to travel between major cities and resorts.
Shall I learn the local lingo?
- While most people you meet will speak good English, it is polite to learn a few basic words in the local dialect and a sure-fire way of making friends.
Do I need to tip?
- It is customary to tip between 10-15% of the bill in restaurants, although this is often automatically included in the final total.
