Aruba insider tips

Whether you want to lounge on beautiful beaches, brush up on your diving skills or explore the interior of this stunning island, we've got the best insider tips to help you make the most of your Aruba holidays.

When is the best time to go?

  • Aruba experiences sunshine all year round, and the 'off season' is not as humid as in some other Caribbean destinations, making it a great place to visit whatever the time of year. Between December and April is the most popular time to visit, so be prepared for busy beaches and waiting lists for some activities. The summer months are quieter, but you can get some great deals on accommodation and more.

Spectacular nights out

  • Aruba boasts some of the most exciting and diverse nightlife in the Caribbean. Visitors looking to party can hit the capital of Oranjestad where they'll find plenty of bars, discos and clubs offering music and dancing into the early hours. - The island is also famous for its casinos, which offer a Vegas-style environment with live entertainment and shows, and there are plenty of opportunities to watch live music or take in some more traditional entertainment.

Hidden gems

  • While many are content to spend their whole holiday on the beach, Aruba boasts some amazingly diverse flora and fauna. Head to the national parks and you can see wild flamingos, colourful lizards, giant butterflies and more.

How's the shopping?

  • You can pick up some great deals on duty free goods and locally made produce. Stock up on great souvenirs like jewellery, artwork and crafts, or items relating to the island's heritage such as Dutch cheeses and more.

Where can I get a burger?

  • Eating out in Aruba offers plenty of choice from cheap and cheerful to high-end gourmet cuisine. You'll find plenty of recognisable chains on the island but the best bet for reasonably priced and tasty food is to try some of the local, Dutch inspired delicacies.

Get in with the locals

  • The locals in Aruba are for the most part friendly, open and eager to share their knowledge. Try asking around for the best tips on where to go and what to do.
  • Can I drink the water?

    • Yes. It's fine to drink the tap water, although all hotels and restaurants will offer bottled as an alternative should you prefer.

    What's the 999 number?

    • The emergency services can be contacted on 911.

    Shall I pack the sunscreen/anorak?

    • Aruba is hot and sunny all year round, although there is always a chance of showers. Pack a lightweight raincoat to ensure you stay dry.

    How do I get around?

    • Taxis, hire cars and water taxis are the most popular and convenient way of travelling around the island.

Shall I learn the local lingo?

    • You don't need to learn the local language as English is spoken almost everywhere. However if you want to be polite and make friends it is always good to learn a few words in Dutch or the local dialect.

    Do I need to tip?

    • Many restaurants will include a 10-15% gratuity charge in your final bill. However, it is customary to tip a little over this if your service has been satisfactory.
