When is the best time to go?

Christ Church has over 8 hours of sunshine all year round, perfect weather for relaxing on a tropical beach. The wet season is from July to November and during this time tropical storms and hurricanes are not uncommon. Always check the forecast before you decide to visit if you plan to travel during the wet season.

Spectacular days out

Be sure to visit the Graeme Hall nature sanctuary in Christ Church. The last remaining mangrove swamp in Barbados, the highlights include endangered egrets and thousands of scuttling fiddler crabs among others. There is also a collection of exotic captive birds.

Hidden Gems

Although most tourists will be drawn to the glitz and glamour of St. Lawrence Gap the smaller resort (and province capital!) of Oistins is a great place to experience the relaxed, traditional way of life. This small fishing town holds ‘fish fry’ parties every Friday night where you can try local dishes and buy locally made craft which are not to be missed.

How’s the shopping?

St. Lawrence Gap in Christ Church is home to a Chattel shopping village. This is a mix of air conditioned malls and more traditional ‘Chattel house’ style shops which sell local arts and crafts, souvenirs and clothing.

Get in with the locals

When in Rome, do as the Romans. Here are a few tips to help you fit in with the locals

  • As a former British colony the etiquette code is very similar to Britain itself, just remember you manners and a big smile and you should be fine
  • Avoid tap water and iced drinks
  • A 10-15% service charge is usually added on to the bill but feel free to tip individual waiters if you’ve experienced exceptional service
  • Last of all remember to pack the sun cream as temperatures easily top 35oc
