Before you go on holiday it’s always useful to have some idea about the local customs and traditions of the place you’re visiting. Oistins is no different and to help you avoid any awkward situations with the locals we’ve put together a few hints and tips so your holiday goes as smoothly as planned.
Barbados as a whole has over 8 hours of sunshine all year round, perfect weather for relaxing on a tropical beach. The wet season is from July to November and during this time tropical storms and hurricanes are not uncommon. Always check the forecast before you decide to visit if you plan to travel during the wet season.
Nothing is as spectacular as cruising round the coastline of Oistins on a catamaran yacht, snorkelling with sea turtles and brightly coloured fish, snacking on fresh fruit and taking in the natural beauty. Catamaran tours run most days and are easy to book through your hotel.
If you can bear to drag yourself away from the beach be sure to visit the Graeme Hall nature sanctuary in Christ Church. The last remaining mangrove swamp in Barbados boasts highlights which include endangered egrets and thousands of scuttling fiddler crabs among others. There is also a collection of exotic captive birds.
Only a short journey from Oistins, the resort of St. Lawrence Gap is home to a Chattel shopping village. This is a mix of air conditioned malls and more traditional ‘Chattel house’ style shops which sell local arts and crafts, souvenirs and clothing.
