Bayahibe, Dominican Republic Holidays

Bayahibe Beach uncovered - insider tips

Whether you’re on an activity-filled family holiday or a romantic getaway for two at Bayahibe Beach, lowcostholidays.com’s insider tips will help you get the most out of your time away.

When is the best time to go?

The Dominican Republic is a tropical island so it is best to avoid the rainy season! This from November to January and May can be quite wet too.

The hottest time of the year is August, with most visitors visiting June – September. If you fancy a quieter time, there is still plenty of sun and fun to be had out of the high season, in late April and late September.

Local Cuisine

There are some great little beach-side restaurants in Bayahibe and the near by Dominicus Beach, serving local seafood prepared fresh from the ocean. There are many Italian options around Dominicus so if you are looking for a good coffee, this is the place to find it.

Many places have great views overlooking the ocean and the boats so you can enjoy the view and see colourful sunsets whilst enjoying good food. The Issamar and Restaurant El Bahia both over look the water and the El Cafecito de la Cubana is said to be the best restaurant in area, serving authentic Cuban food.

The best day trips beyond the beach

There are many little places in the area to visit away from the beach, so if you fancy a day-trip, try some of these.

Take a tour of the Santo Domingo – the largest city on the island and the oldest city in the New World, the first place from which the Spanish ruled their Caribbean colonies. This vibrant urban sprawl has a lot to offer, with historical buildings, museums and shopping. The Cathedral Santa Maria La Menor is definitely worth a visit. This spectacular building was the first cathedral to be built in America, in 1540, and some say this is where Christopher Columbus’s remains lie! It is in the Zona Colonial – a place of such importance that it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Altos de Chavon is one of the biggest attractions in the area, not far from Bayahibe beach. Get lost in the narrow cobbled streets of this re-created European-style Medieval village; visit one of the lovely little restaurants and shops selling local crafts. You might even be lucky enough to be visiting whilst a major musical act is playing at the Roman-style outdoor amphitheater. It seats 5,000 people and has hosted the likes of Frank Sinatra and The Pet Shop boys over the years.
