The Dominican Republic is a tropical island so it has a rainy season from November to January. May can also be quite wet but is much warmer than the winter months.
The hottest time of the year is August, with most tourists visiting June – September. If you fancy a quieter time, there is still plenty of sun and fun to be had out of the High Holiday season, in late April and late September.
When on holiday in Boca Chica, Calle Duarte is the place to be at night. From 7-11 pm the main street not far from the beach, Calle Duarte becomes pedestrianised and is a great place to have dinner in a relaxed, family friendly atmosphere. Restaurant seating spills out onto the road and local music can be heard playing. From midnight the bars start to open and the entire street takes on a lively atmosphere until about 4am. It is perfectly safe and the crowd is a good mix of tourists and locals.
For a quiet romantic meal there are some lovely places to dine overlooking the sea. Eat fresh seafood by candlelight at Neptunos and Boca Marina.
You can drink coconut juice from the coconut, get a massage on the beach, eat fresh mangoes from the market and rent a bicycle.
The official language is Spanish as it was once a Spanish colony. A few phrases are always useful and polite but most people will speak English to tourists.
Most beaches are protected so when snorkeling and diving you are not allowed to pick up shells or stones to take home with you, not matter how beautiful they look!
