Holiday in Santa Domingo

Santa Domingo uncovered – insider tips

Whether you want to explore the sights of this fascinating city or discover the beautiful beaches around Santo Domingo, lowcostholidays.com's insider tips will help you get the most out of your holiday.

When is the best time to go?

The most popular time of year to visit is between December and April when the weather is at its best. While beaches and attractions may get crowded during this period, there are also plenty of festivals and activities to keep you entertained. If you're looking for a quieter break and don't mind a chance of rain, the off season is still hot and sunny and there are some great bargains to be had.

Spectacular days out

While the nearby beaches provide the perfect location to relax and unwind, Santa Domingo itself is an amazing city to discover. Explore the Colonial Zone with its historic landmarks, see the final resting place of Christopher Columbus or learn about the city's past in its many museums and galleries.

Hidden Gems

Hire a bike and explore the expansive Parque Mirador Sur, a beautiful park overlooking the coast that's a favourite with local families, or visit the Dominican Republic's own 'Eden Project' at the Jardin Botanico.

How's the shopping?

The Colonial Zone offers plenty of opportunities to shop for souvenirs including local arts and crafts, textiles, jewellery and more. You can pick up some great deals on locally sourced gemstones like amber from the many shops and market stalls – just don't forget to haggle!

Where can I get a burger?

You'll find plenty of recognisable chains serving the usual burgers and fries throughout the city, but it's worth branching out and sampling the local cuisine. Try local specialities like mashed plantains, fresh seafood and Creole-influenced dishes.

Can I drink the water?

We recommend that you use bottled water to drink and brush your teeth, as the tap water may not agree with you.

What's the 999 number?

The emergency services can be reached by dialling 911.

Shall I pack the sun cream/anorak?

The Dominican Republic is hot and sunny, but there is always a chance of rain. Pack a lightweight anorak to make sure you stay dry.

How do I get around?

Taxis and the recently introduced Metro system are the best ways to get around the city, although many of the main attractions are reachable on foot. If you want to explore outside the city you should consider hiring a car.

Shall I learn the lingo?

Although many people do speak English, you will find it much easier to get around and meet people if you have a basic grasp of Spanish.

Do I need to tip?

Restaurants will often add a 10% gratuity to your final bill, but it is customary to tip more if service has been good.
