St Vincent, Caribbean

Very little of St Vincent is flat as it is a volcanic island. St Vincent’s southern coast boasts white sand but generally the colour is darker throughout the island. On the west or “Leeward” side of St Vincent, the area is lusciously green with black sand beaches, like Petit Byahaut beach. On the east or “Windward” side of St Vincent the coast is generally rugged, with stunning long stretches of black sandy beach and crashing surf. The sea is calmer on this side.
Local arts and crafts, and busy colourful market stalls in Kingstontown Market on St Vincent is a great place to pick up souvenir bargains. Head to the west coast of the island to marvel at the Botanical Gardens, the oldest in the Caribbean, filled with rare and exotic plants and flowers. Take a ferry ride from Villa Beach to visit Young Island and the Rock Fort, where a walk of about 250 steps takes you to a point of spectacular views over the Grenadines, or visit the St Vincent and the Grenadines National Trust headquarters in the old Carnegie Public Library, where tours can be taken generally during the week.
