Holidays in the Canary Islands have long been popular with UK tourists looking for a warm, sunny climate, fine sandy beaches and constant year round temperatures. Although part of Spain, they are actually closer to Africa and consist of seven larger islands which include Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma, Gomera and Hierro and a few smaller ones. The islands are situated to the south-west of Spain and north-west of Africa, directly in front of the coast of Morocco. With four of Spain's seven major national nature reserves located in the islands, a Canary Island holiday offers a volcanic landscape and an extraordinary wealth of natural beauty. Tenerife and Gran Canaria are the liveliest tourist resorts with plenty of beach activity and nightlife, Tenerife is also the largest of the seven islands. Gran Canaria is a horticultural paradise where thousands of exotic fruits, trees and crops flourish. There are banana and coffee plantations, fields of sugar cane and tobacco, date palm forests and orange groves. Papayas, mangoes and avocadoes are all produced on the island and it also offers dramatic volcanic mountains, tropical forests, desert areas and golden beaches. Fuerteventura is considered to be the oldest of the islands and has the longest beaches, a quiet environment and is a popular destination for families, couples and nature lovers. Lanzarote attracts international visitors with its unique combination of volcanic caves and craters and wonderful beaches and finally, the last of the main tourist areas, beautiful La Palma is unspoilt, quiet, lush and green.
