• You cannot visit Dondcheng without spending a day in Tiananmen Square, the largest square in the world. Wander the old neighbourhoods and alleyways known as ‘Hutongs’ in the north of the district. Here you can experience real local culture in the small shops, food stalls and markets, or sit back and relax in one of Dondcheng’s beautiful city parks.
• Pass beneath the Tiananmen gate, and the huge portrait of Chairman Mao, into the Forbidden City and palace. Explore the vast maze of courtyards and wonder at the lasting grandeur of the Ming and Qing dynasties.
• Visit one of Dondcheng’s many city parks. Liuyin Park offers a glimpse of life in rural China, and has a children’s playground for little ones. The water park in Qingnianhu Park has a large pool with fun waterslides.
• Shop in the Nanluoguxiang hutang neighbourhood. This restored hutang is lined with small boutiques and craft shops where you can purchase a unique Dondcheng gift to remember your holiday by.
• Be brave and try a local delicacy in the Donghuamen night market. Could you snack on a scorpion, starfish or silkworm grub?. Guijie, also known as Ghost Street, is Dongcheng’s most famous food neighbourhood. Red lanterns line the street where you can find hundreds of restaurants tucked into traditional courtyards.
• Nanluogu Xiang is the place to be for drinks and live music, offering a traditional Beijing night atmosphere.
