The west bank of the Nile is strewn with rock-hewn mausoleums known collectively as the Tombs of the Nobles, and visiting these makes for a great day out. There are also more mausoleums close to the city, including the Mausoleum of Sha Aga Khan. If you head to the hill on top of the Tombs of the Nobles you can see Kubbet el-Hawa, a shrine to a local sheikh and holy man. There’s also an incredible view over Aswan from here.
