• Rising above the city, the stunning fortified city at Carcassonne is must see destination. Founded in the fifth century, this city consists of a double ring of ramparts, and 53 towers. If nothing else visit to see the fortified city alone, it’s worth it. Also, inside, there is an affordable Michelin starred restaurant that serves a delicious Cassoulet, if fine dining fits to your tastes.
• Visit the Basilica of Saint Nazaire, which has spectacular stained glass, and wonderfully detailed carvings inside, and out of this French national monument.
• Take a walk through the lower, newer village. Here, you will find a number of vineyards that give France its reputation as the wine capital of the world.
• Just up the road is the Rennes le Chateau, where Bérenger Saunière reportedly found a mysterious buried treasure in the church. It has been rumoured that Mary Magdalene stayed there, and that the Holy Grail could be buried nearby. Believable or not, it is a place of international folklore, and visiting a place like that will always impress your friends.
