Bayeaux Highlights
- The Bayeaux Tapestry, depicting the lead up, and the eventual conquest of England by William the Conqueror. Being one of the most famous tapestries in the world, this is one historical artefact that you don’t want to miss.
- The stunning cathedral, dating back in part to 1077, is the clear focal point of the town. With a number of medieval homes surrounding the area, there is a wealth of history here, and none of it worth missing.
- Being near the coast, you are in a perfect location to visit the Normandy Beach landings. Also, Bayeaux is home to the largest British war cemetery in Normandy. The cemetery is a very moving place, with the families of the dead buried there, given the opportunity to compose messages to be engraved on the headstones.
- A few museums to keep in consideration are the Memorial Museum of the Battle of Normandy, which documents the conflict on Normandy soil. Also, The Museum Baron Gérard offers history of the town, and includes the lace and porcelain industry of the region, as well as a considerable amount of art.
