Regensburg at a Glance

Located in Bavaria, where the River Denube and Regen Rivers meet, Regensburg is one of Germany’s oldest towns. Created by the Romans during 179 AD, this former military town is dotted with historical gems that cannot be missed, and is also only a skip and hop away from the beautiful Bavarian forest. It is so impressive that it has even been classed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Top Attractions in Regensburg

  • Dating back to the Roman era, there are plenty of Roman remnants to be found scattered around Regensburg. At the top of the list should be the Porta Praetoria, the remains of an old stone Roman fortress. Its huge arched gateway will send imaginations running wild. Also drop in at the Historisches Museum, inside, you will find an old stone tablet dedicated to the Roman God Mercury. For families travelling with kids, this is certainly a lesson in history.
  • The Old Stone Bridge dates back to the 12th Century, and spans the Denube with an impressive 16 arches. Connecting the Old Town with Stadtamhof, it is definitely something that needs to be seen.
  • Old Town Hall is a well-preserved building from the 13th Century, and contains the rooms where the Imperial Diet used to sit between 1663 and 1806. Below are the dungeons and torture rooms! Take a guided tour in order to fully appreciate the history of this building.
  • After an afternoon of sight-seeing, head over to the tranquil Duke’s Park. Enjoy the many beautiful flowers and trees, and muse over the archaic 13 Century Prebrunn Tower also found in the park. Other notable parks, which nature-lovers will no doubt enjoy, include Villa Park and Eastern Avenue Park. In the summer months, you can also head over to the beer gardens found attached to most pubs.
  • No visit to a Bavarian town would be complete without a visit to the Bavarian Forest, which is not too far away. Walking enthusiasts can follow the many trails and paths found across these grounds, and enjoy the forest’s unspoiled beauty. Pack the family into a rented car and spend the day picnicking in the Bavarian Forest.
