The Wurzburger Residence should be placed at the top of any visitor’s ‘to-do’ list. Added to UNESCO’s World Heritage list, this is a magnificent palace that dates back to 1720. It has 300 rooms spread over three floors, but its best known for its sumptuous staircase. The whole castle can be considered a visual masterpiece! Don’t forget to look up; there are some gorgeous old ceiling paintings to be admired too.
Dominating the skyline in Wurzburg is the ancient Fortress Marienberg; it existed all the way back in 1000 BC. From here, you can get a stunning view over the rest of the city. There are several old churches you can visit whilst on a Wurzburg holiday. The Mariankapelle Church is gothic in style and dates back to 1377. Examine the gorgeous ornamental designs, the pretty arch doorways, and the beautiful paintings of the ‘Madonna.’ The Neumunster Church is a Romanesque building from the 11th Century. On site are the graves of Saint Kilian and his comrades, missionaries who were assassinated in 689AD. Its tall tower also promises to impress you.
