- Begin your holiday with a lesson in history with a visit to the Hohensyburg. This ancient Syburg Tower is not what it used to be but its ruins promise to intrigue. Destroyed in the 13th Century, visitors are still able to enjoy the beautiful panoramic views from its stony grounds.
- Another tourist hot-spot, the 12th Century St. Mary’s Church or Marienkirche, is a must-see. Rebuilt in the 1950s after it was destroyed in World War II, art enthusiasts will enjoy the art paintings and monuments held inside. The city’s famous artist, Conrad van Soest, designed the intricately painted alter. Another worthwhile visit is to St. Peter’s Church or Petrikirche. Built during the 14th Century, it also has a very pretty interior.
- Westphalia Park is perfect for a relaxing stroll or a romantic picnic. Here, you will find the Rose Garden, which comes alive during the summer months. It has over 3000 rose species to admire.
- The landmark Florian Tower dominates the skyline, you can’t miss it! This popular T.V tower is 208 meters high and offers the most stunning views in Dortmund. There are two viewing platforms from which to look over the city, and you can even enjoy a beer with the view. For more traditional German beer, make sure to visit one the many charming beer gardens afterwards, found at the back of most German pubs.
- Head to Dortmund in December and try and catch the spectacular Christmas Market. The Dortmund Christmas Market is one of the biggest in Germany, so it’s definitely something special. Here, over 300 stalls means it will have you perusing for days. German food and sweets, toys, clothes, jewelry are just a few of the things you’ll find here. Not only is it the perfect place to shop for Christmas presents or a souvenir, but you will have the opportunity to see Germany’s biggest Christmas tree. It’s 45 meters tall and made up of around 1,700 individual fir trees.
