• The old town should definitely be number one on your sightseeing hit-list. Not only does it have some fine examples of medieval and renaissance architecture, but it’s also home to St. Mary’s Church, or Marienkirche, with its baroque organ and 15th century astronomical clock; now listed as a UNESCO cultural heritage site.
• Families will be pleased to know that the district of Warnemunde with its seaside resort and sandy beaches is just a short boat ride or drive away. It also has a variety of restaurants and a fish market selling local specialities.
• Sampling the local Baltic cuisine is highly recommended. There are a number of restaurants to choose from all offering a selection of mouth-watering dishes such as seafood, fresh fish and specialities such kale with raisins or honey roast ribs.
• Visitors looking to get an insight into what Rostock’s history holds, may want to spend an afternoon at The Museum of Cultural History which is located in an old 13th century convent.
• The Monastery of the Holy Cross, just to the west of the University of Rostock, is another popular attraction. An imposing building, it now houses the Museum of Culture, which is a well worth spending a couple of hours exploring.
