Essen is one of the ten largest cities in Germany, located in the North Rhine Westphalia region in the west of Germany. The city sits on the River Ruhr and has been inhabited for thousands of years. In more recent years the city was a centre for coal and steel mining and was named The European Capital of Culture in 2010. Essen Highlights

  • The most famous attraction in the city is the UNESCO World Heritage Site at the Zollverein Industrial Complex. This disused coal mine is considered one of the world’s architectural masterpieces, built in the Bahaus style the mine has been closed for nearly 40 years but guided tours do run around the complex.
  • Essen Cathedral originally dates back to the 9th century and is home to the Golden Madonna of Essen, the oldest known statue of its kind depicting the Madonna. There are also several other religious artefacts on display in the cathedral.
  • Baldeney Lake, also known as the Gruga is one of the largest and most spectacular city gardens in Germany. It is a favourite location for locals as well as tourists. Baldeney Lake is a man-made lake surrounded by gardens, and is an ideal spot for water-sports.
  • The Aalto Opera House is a wonderful building, famous as much for its architecture as its theatre performances and is a must for fans of opera and the theatre.
  • The Museum Folkwang is home to one of the Ruhr region’s largest collections of modern art from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries housing some important pieces from the period.
