Gelsenkirchen is a city in the North Rhine Westphalia region of western Germany. Until the 19th century and the advent of the industrial revolution Gelsenkirchen was a village, but in the beginning of the 20th century Gelsenkirchen was the most important mining town in Europe. All the coal mines have since been shut and Gelsenkirchen has since become a modern and exciting German city.

• Gelsenkirchen has a vibrant and busy nightlife. There are plenty of restaurants and cafes serving a wide range of cuisine as well as a number of bars and clubs open until the early hours. There are also a large number of entertainment venues in the city hosting music shows and gigs throughout the year. The city is also very close to the exciting cities of Essen and Bochum, both of which have a lively night time scene.
