Dessau is the third largest city in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt. Dessau is probably most well-known as one of the centres of the architectural movement known as Bauhaus. The city is home to some of the first examples of Bauhaus architecture and some have been made into UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The city has a number of museums and art galleries and there are often exhibitions and installations of important artworks. There are a number of hidden beaches along the shores of the two rivers, so pack a swimming costume. • The Worlitz Gardens of Dessau are also known as the Worlitz English Gardens, these are a large collection of gardens designed and built in the 18th century. The gardens consist of 55 square miles of protected gardens, lakes and buildings that are designed to enhance the beauty of the natural surroundings. The gardens are a wonderful place to stroll around and it is possible to rent gondolas and boats in the lakes.
• The Bauhaus building is situated in the centre of the city and is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The building designed in the influential Bauhaus style is now home to a small museum and exhibition space.
• The two rivers that converge in the centre of the city have a number of cycle paths that run alongside them. Cycling is the ideal way to discover the hidden beaches that lie just outside the city that are perfect for swimming and spending some time relaxing.
