Crete holidays uncovered- Insider Tips

Steep with ancient ruins and history, Crete truly is a breath taking destination. If not though, you’ll be able to appreciate the warm climate and excellent tourist facilities. lowcostholidays.com has some must know insider tips for your holidays in Crete.

Crete nights out

Crete has a few resorts offering the best nightlife in Greece. Malia is renowned for giving many some unforgettable nights, with its wide selection of bars and clubs open to the early hours and welcoming to party goers. Party until the sun comes up in this hedonistic heaven.

However, if your holiday in Crete is not centred on getting a groove on with thousands of other people, then Crete also has a more sophisticated side to it. Family-friendly places lie everywhere too and look out for excursions that offer an authentic Cretan experience (dancing, food, the lot!) for cheap prices.

Hidden Gems

Trust us when we say with some confidence that you will be hard-pressed to find landscape as beautiful Crete’s. Relax on the white sandy beaches or take a dip in the ocean with a snorkel, letting out excitable gasps every time you see a fish that looks a little bit like Nemo. Explore on your own to find those hidden gems, just don’t tell anyone.

How’s the shopping?

If the temperature is racing towards the mid 30’s - go shopping! Let the others sweat under the hot sun on the beaches in Hersonissos and find the best bargains for yourself. Fur and leather are of the highest quality (admittedly, not quite the right climate for that type of attire – but still), as well as beautifully crafted gold are the Greek’s specialties.

Food glorious food…

Whether you’re lining your stomach before a big night out in Malia, or enjoying a luxurious meal whilst watching the sunset over the calm ocean – Crete has fantastically diverse cuisine. From Italian to good old British grub. If you’re on a budget you can eat well for around 10 euros. If you have money to spare then dine out in style, trying the best Crete has to offer.

When to go

Peak season is May to September, with soaring temperatures, wine festivals and a lively clubbing scene in Malia. The climate is still nice in spring and autumn, but rainy season occurs January to March. If you so visit in winter, catch the St Nikolas festival in December!

The mandatory worries

Here’s some handy information to remember when you’re on your holiday to Crete:

Can I drink the water?

  • We wouldn’t recommend it, stick to bottled water as some water in Crete is disinfected with chemicals.

What’s the 999 number?

  • Crete emergency services can be contacted on 100.

Shall I pack the sun cream?

  • In the summer months Crete can reach the high 30’s so make sure you pack lots of cream and keep yourself hydrated!

How do I get around?

  • Most attractions are within walking distance in Crete’s popular resorts. Alternatively, taxis are cheap and a fast way to travel – and a lot cooler (in temperature not dress sense).

Shall I learn the local lingo?

  • Nope. A lot of bars and restaurants in the popular resorts will have people who can speak good English. If you’re a bit further off the beaten track though, it might help to learn a few helpful phrases.

Do I need to tip?

  • It’s not compulsory, but adding a little 5-10% will keep the waiters happy for a job well done.
