There is a superb choice of magnificent beaches in Aghios Nikolaos; many mentioned here have been awarded the Blue Flag status, with an even more extensive choice of superb beaches found in Elounda and Kalo Chorio.
In the centre of Aghios Nikolaos is sandy Kitroplatia Beach, surrounded by restaurants and hotels, and the EOT beach boasts shallow water, a pristine sandy beach and a selection of water sports, as well as a mini-golf course, cafes, basketball court and huge swimming pool.
Sandy Amos Beach is close to the central shopping area and Ammoudi is small and the water deep. Havania beach is two kilometres out of Agios Nikolaos towards Elounda, and is a wonderful stretch of sand with good beach facilities. Near to Kalo Chorio and also two kilometres out of Agios Nikolaos, is Almiros Beach. The area is wooded with eucalyptus trees and rushes, and is where the fresh water river joins the sea. The endless beach at Almyros/Almiros, is excellent and well organised.
