A holiday to Halkidiki on the Greek mainland is about relaxing and enjoying your surroundings. With many sights and stunning scenery to explore, a holiday to Halkidiki could just be what you are looking for.

Greece’s second largest city is Thessaloniki, the gateway to Halkidiki or Chalkidiki in the north of Greece on the mainland. Traditional villages, modern resorts, sheltered bays, golden beaches, crystal blue sea and a wonderful Mediterranean climate, draw visitors to this area, year after year.

Halkidiki is split into three peninsulas: Kassandra, Sithonia and Athos. Kassandra boasts enormous stretches of sandy beaches lined with pines and the beautiful aquamarine sea, and is the preferred choice for those looking for a lively destination with a lot of nightlife and entertainment.

Sithonia is similar to Kassandra with its wonderful golden beaches, and you will also admire the fabulous landscapes, picturesque harbours and secluded bays.

Cheap hotels and self catering apartment complexes blend with the deluxe, so the choices of accommodation suit every pocket.

The most enchanting of the peninsulas is Athos, a self-governed division of the Greek state which is the only place in Greece almost totally devoted to praying and worshiping.

The Sithonia peninsula in Halkidiki is the ideal holiday spot to spend time on the superb beaches soaking up the sun with numerous watersporting activities such as swimming, surfing and diving.

Nikiti beach, in Halkidiki, on the west is set beneath the hills, and the coast line leads to coves and smaller beaches. You will find long, sandy beaches with very clean waters on the southwestern side of Sithonia, Halkidiki and the beaches near to the resort of Neos Marmaras are beautiful. Renowned for its stunning beaches is Kassandra. Water sports and a number of bars are located at the sandy beach of Nea Moudania, and at the long sandy beach at Agios Mamas. On the tip of Kassandra are also the beaches of Chryssi Ammos, Alonaki and Agios Georgios – to name a few!

Nearly fifty of the beaches around Halkidiki have been awarded the coveted Blue Flag.

Whilst the chance to visit much of the Athos Peninsula in Halkidiki would be very interesting, the closest visitors may get to the Holy Mount, is to take a boat trip along the coast line or an enchantin holiday in Ouranoupolis. Do however take a trip to the city of Thessaloniki in Halkidiki, where modern and ancient cultures combine, and where you may buy your holiday souvenirs cheaply.

When looking for decent bars and restaurants, Halkidiki will not disappoint. Poulidou 32 is a great atmospheric restaurant that serves great local seafood whilst providing a good dining experience.

Situated on the waterfront in Neos Marmaras is club Pluton. This club is a hot spot and stays open till early morning in an outdoor venue under the starlit sky.

Alternatively, there is a large water park with slides and swimming pools in Thessaloniki, Halkidiki and courts to play tennis, basketball and volleyball. The ancient Greek castles are fabulous photo opportunities and the views are quite breathtaking. The Caves of Petralona are near the pretty market town of Nea Moudania in Halkidiki where one of the most important prehistoric finds is located; a skull and tools found to date back more than 600,000 years.

Halkidiki is not only an area of outstanding natural beauty but offers an array of world class attractions including ancient Greek historical sites. Mount Athos on Halkidiki’s most Eastern peninsular is a UNESCO World Heritage site and features a mountain containing 20 monasteries. The Greeks call it the ‘Holy Mountain’ due to its great religious and historical significance. The monasteries are still used by those seeking to live in exile. While tourists are not allowed onto the peninsular for this reason, it is still possible to view the mountain by ferry, the perfect way to take in Mount Athos’s stunning natural beauty without having to tackle the mountain itself.

Halkidiki is one of the least touristy resorts in Greece and as a result it is really easy to find great, authentic Greek food. Think lamb koftas, meat kebabs and traditional Greek bread with dips and olive oil. It is also possible to get a taste of real Greek culture, with several restaurants offering traditional Greek entertainment. Akropolis restaurant in Kriopigi is one of these places. The family who own it put on regular Greek nights, which include Greek dancing, traditional music and, you guessed it, plate smashing.
