Sami Holidays

Sami Holiday Information

A popular working port town on the east coast of Kefalonia, Sami (or Same) was the location for part of the filming of Captain Corelli’s Mandolin. Walk along the harbour front in Sami lined with open air cafes and restaurants, and you may recognise some of the locations for the fight scenes in the film starring Nicholas Cage and Penelope Cruz.

Ferry boats leave from Sami to take visitors to the neighbouring island of Ithica and Patras on the Greek Mainland, which are also super day trips or overnight alternatives when on holiday in Kefalonia.

Sami is an ancient town and if you venture into the hills overlooking Sami, you will find many ruins including the Kyatis acropolis and Ayii Fanendes monastery. At the foot of Ayii Fanendes hill is Dragon House; ruins of a Roman building. Melissani Cave is a short distance north of Sami near Karavomilos where water reflects off of stalactites creating magical kaleidoscopic effects.

You will never be short of choice for places to spend the evening in Sami; the main road is usually closed to traffic at the end of the day, when Sami comes alive. There is a huge choice of cafes, bars, restaurants and tavernas, as well as a host of shops and supermarkets selling everything you could possibly want whilst on holiday in Sami.
