Here’s a useful travel checklist to make sure your holiday goes safely.
Before you leave
Find out where the nearest embassy will be. Check their website to confirm what will be available to you and when they open.
Ensure you take out insurance and that it covers you for anything you may be doing such water sports.
Check what vaccinations you need by visiting the NHS Fit For Travel website, your travel health clinic or GP at least 6 weeks before you travel.
Call 112 in any EU country if you need to contact the emergency services.
Some countries require visas to visit them, double check this before you leave.
Ensure your passport is in good condition and still valid.
Take photocopies of your passport and other important documents or store copies in an online safe.
Purchase a guide book so that you have a reliable source of information during your holidays.
Read up on your destination, local laws and customs. Check the FCO travel advice pages.
Tell friends and family where you are going. Leave them your contact details, insurance policy details and your itinerary.
For those who are travelling within the European Economic Area, get a European Health Insurance Card for free or reduced emergency care. Please be aware that you still need travel insurance.
Take enough money for your holiday in a mixture of cash and travellers cheques.
Once you’re abroad
Keep your head and trust your instincts.
Make sure you know what the local laws are.
Try and learn a few useful phrases in the local language. This could help you communicate a potential problem and ingratiates you with the locals.
Avoid displaying valuables in public and it some cases a padlock on your luggage may be recommended.
Check that your mobile phone will work in the country you are visiting and store useful local numbers in case of emergencies.
Consider the environment don’t buy wildlife souvenirs or use excess water in countries where it is lacking.
Be aware of food not prepared by yourself and avoid it if you feel it is not safe to eat.
Ask before you take photographs of people or spiritual buildings.
Water quality is one of the main causes of illness overseas. Drink bottled water where possible.
