Known as the Diamond Capital of the world, Surat is also famous for its textiles. More than 90% of the world’s diamonds are cut and polished here, making it a popular centre for business as well as being home to a wide range of attractions and cuisines. It is a great alternative to a European city break.

  • All of the major festivals famous to India can be enjoyed in Surat, including Navratri, Diwali and Ganesh Chaturthi, as well as the Uttarayan kite flying festival. Unique to Surat is the festival of Chandi Padvo.
  • Surat has great range of sports facilities too, including cricket, tennis, gymkhana and swimming. An annual boat race takes place along the city’s river – the Tapi River – starting in the Arabian Sea, and is well worth experiencing on your holiday.
  • The Chintamani Jain Temple looks very simple from the outside, but step inside to see the remarkable craftsmanship that has gone into this amazing temple. Similarly Goa offers some beautiful examples of Indian temples and architecture.
  • The Dutch Garden is the cemetery dedicated to the officers who originally settled in Gujarat. The Dutch and English tombs are magnificent to behold – in particular, the largest tombs of Christopher Oxenden and George Oxenden, who took charge of the English factory.
  • The Sardar Patel Museum pays tribute to the freedom fighter, Sardar Vallabhbai Patel and is a national memorial museum. Visitors will delight in the Sardar Open Garden, where you may see peacocks and monkeys, as well as the Sardar Open Air Theatre, where documentaries are frequently shown.
  • The Vansda National Park shows off some of Gujarat’s most beautiful natural landscapes and includes such delights as the Botanical Gardens, Gira Falls and the Conservation Centre. It is well worth a visit and tourists can learn about the wildlife and plants within the park.
  • Home to the world famous Surti cuisine, Surat offers visitors a wide ranging culinary experience. Surti cuisine is quite spicy and it is common to find Surti kiosks along the edge of the river during the colder winter months, where the warm, spicy food helps stave off the chill.
