Kovalam at a Glance
Once a traditional fishing village, Kovalam has seen huge development over the last three decades. The word Kovalam translates as a ‘grove of coconut trees’, an appropriate name considering the resort is on the beachfront and has a delightful sandy crescent shaped beach dotted with palm trees. Kovalam is surrounded by a charming and undeveloped landscape of palm groves and rice paddies.

The northern Samudra Beach is the place to relax, chill out and soak up the sun. For more beautiful beaches, our experts also recommend Goa for your perfect holiday destination in 2012.
- Close to Kovalam is Kerala’s capital Trivandrum where you can spend a day exploring. Head away from the main road to discover pagoda-shaped buildings, narrow lanes and intriguing city streets. Whilst there take a walk around the lakes and woodlands of the Zoological gardens where there are open enclosures for tigers and birds. The huge 260 year-old Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple is also worth a visit to see its 30m tall gateway tower.
- There’s a good choice of restaurants in Kovalam serving both local and international cuisine. Suprabhatham has a secluded and romantic location in the palm groves and serves affordable and authentic vegetarian Keralan dishes, while the small family run restaurant at the Devi Holiday Inn just off the beach has a good choice of Indian food on the menu.
