Kumarakom at a Glance

Kumarakom is a beautiful holiday destination on the edge of the vast Vembanad Lake. With a wealth of nature and wildlife to discover, and a beautiful climate to enjoy, holidays to Kumarakom offer some of the finest views and the best sightseeing opportunities in the Kerala region.

Explore Kumarakom

  • Kumarakom's main attraction is Vemaband Lake, the largest lake in the region and a major source of fish and other flora and fauna for the village. Boating and yachting is a popular past-time out on the lake, while fishing expeditions offer a fantastic opportunity to discover the beautiful species of Indian freshwater fish, as well as stunning panoramic views across the water and shoreline. Goa also offers countless opportunities to explore the other Indian marine life and activities in 2012.
  • With excellent transport links across the region, Kumarakom holidays are the ideal way to discover Kerala. Take a boat trip to the small Muhamma resort, and on to Alappuzha, the oldest planned town in the region boasting a wealth of southern Indian history, or jump on the train and head to the large town of Kottayam, a major trading centre and a hub of culture and media.

Why a Holiday to Kumarakom?

  • Kerala is a famously popular habitat for a number of rare and migrating species, and Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is the perfect excursion to take out on the water for the best glimpse at these beautiful birds. Canoe visits to the sanctuary leave directly from Kumarakom harbour, and once there you can see the area's stunning transformation from rubber plantation to bird paradise. Look out for cuckoos and owls, and even more exotic creatures such as parrots and Siberian cranes.
  • The area around the resort is equally beautiful, and makes for a fantastic day out on foot. The fruit groves and mangrove forests provide ample space to get out and explore, while the still-water canals winding through the rich agricultural region are carpeted with beautiful lilac water hyacinths. Head further out and discover the breathtaking Aruvikkuzhi waterfalls, and the scenic valley of Elaveezha Poonchira.
  • While the climate in Kerala can be unpredictable, the best time to visit is generally from August to March, when the temperatures are a moderate 25-27C. Alternatively, some even prefer to visit during monsoon season in the Summer months, as it's believed in India that the cool, dust-free air can rejuvenate the skin and the senses. Whenever you visit, make sure you pack both a swimsuit and an umbrella!
