Pondicherry Holidays

Pondicherry at a Glance

As part of a former French colony, the Indian city of Pondicherry is an intriguing fusion of European and Asian cultures. Among the Indian-style houses and buildings you'll still find French bakeries and cafés, and the two halves of the city, either side of the river, lie in such contrast to each other that a Pondicherry holiday is guranteed to be varied and exciting at every turn.

Explore Pondicherry

  • Holidays to Pondicherry are popular among tourists just looking to experience the atmosphere and culture of the city's two halves. It boasts many colonial-style buildings, standing boldly next to beautiful mosques and sculptures, and the combination of Indian spirituality and French Riviera-style avenues create an unusual, cosmopolitan vibe across the city. The city Botanical Garden is a fantastic display of French design, with a number of exotic plants and wildlife to discover.
  • The resort boasts four major beaches, attracting a huge number of visitors every year looking to catch the Summer sun during the dry season. The largest, Promenade Beach, stretches for 1.5 kilometres and features a number of sculptures and memorials, as well as soft white sands, ideal for sunbathing and water-sports. Auroville beach is quieter, with shallow waters, making it ideal for families, while the secluded Serenity and Paradise beaches can only be reached by boat, ideal for couples of solo travellers looking to get away from the crowds.
  • For another secluded holiday then consider Goa for beautiful, tranquil beaches.

Why a Holiday to Pondicherry?

  • While Pondicherry holidays lend a distinctly French feel to your Summer getaway, the history and culture of India is still very much present in the architecture across the city. There are a number of Hindu temples, such as the Sri Manakula Vinayagar Temple, a breathtaking tribute to Ganesha with a beautiful golden spire and several sculptures. Meeran Mosque is another piece of impressive Islamic architecture, with large Gothic pillars and a large dome, a must-see for culture-lovers.
  • The Union Territory of Pondicherry consists of the City of Pondicherry and three other districts. Karaikal is a port city best known for its rich religious heritage, with unique temples and beautiful artwork across the city. Yanam and Mahé are smaller towns, ideal for a quiet day trip whether you want to see the surrounding countryside or just meet the locals and escape the hustle and bustle of city life.
  • Summer in the region lasts from April to early June, promising hot temperature and dry, sunny days but be prepared as the tropical weather conditions can often be very unpredictable.
