Denpasar at a Glance
Denpasar is the capital city of Bali, and is situated in the south of this popular Indonesian province. Unlike the tourist hot spots of Kuta and Canggu, Denpasar still maintains a sense of the real Bali. You won’t find crowds of backpackers here.
Ideal For...
- City lovers who love the bustling local markets.
- Intrepid travellers who want to find the real Bali.
- Culture fans who prefer temples to beach resorts.
Explore Denpasar
- The Bali Museum is a must-visit to learn about the history and culture of this fascinating part of Indonesia. Set in beautiful grounds, the museum is housed in four pavilions and exhibits include stone and bronze artifacts, textiles and performance art.
- The grandeur of Puputan Park is home to the beautifully impressive Bajra Sandhi monument. A symbol of Balinese independence in 1945, the monument measures 45 metres high, has 17 corners, and eight different entrances.
- The Palace of Satria and its royal temples are home to the Denpasar royal family. Carefully maintained with beautiful ornate carvings, these stunning temples are open to city residents for worship, though tourists are always welcome to visit.
- The Badung Central market on Jalan Gajah Mada is the biggest market in the city. Spend hours wandering the market’s three levels, and purchase fresh produce, spices, and local crafts. Similarly there are two bird markets in the city, Pasar Burung Satria and Pasar Burung Sanglah. Visit just for the spectacle of hundreds of exotic birds in ornate wooden cages, though don’t expect it to be a peaceful experience.
- For a truly authentic experience of Denpasar visit the Kereneng Night market. Opening at sunset and closing at dawn, the market stalls offer the full spectrum of mouth-watering Indonesian food and is a truly unique way to spend an evening.
Why a Holiday to Denpasar?
- Set back from the touristy coastline, Denpasar is rarely explored by Bali’s usual beach loving tourists. Yet the city is alive with Balinese culture, and would be a real shame to miss on your holiday. Grab a map, chat to the locals, and discover the wonders of Denpasar.
- The lack of tourists mean Denpasar’s beautiful temples remain peaceful and distinctly un-commercialised.
- Denpasar is one of the best places in Bali to sample local food. Speak to locals to find the hidden restaurant gems and to experience the best cuisine on offer.
- Denpasar is a great base to explore the rest of Bali, with Ubud and the beaches of Sanur are easily reached.
