- Sligo town is the major town in the county and is situated in Sligo bay looking out onto the Atlantic Ocean. The town is a traditional Irish seaside resort that is known for its warm hospitality and traditional folk music. Head to one of the local pubs to get a feel for the place and you might catch some live music.
- Sligo Abbey is one of the oldest buildings in the town of Sligo, it was originally founded in the 13th century and is open to the public.
- Knocknarea Mountain lies just over five kilometres to the west of Sligo town in the north of the county. The mountain is not too high at only 300 metres and can be walked up in less than 40 minutes. At the top there is a spectacular view of Sligo and the surrounding area, there is also a large cairn, or burial mound thought to be the grave of Queen Maeve.
- Coney Island is a small island out to sea that can be reached at low tide across the sands. However it is advised to check the tides as many people strand themselves on the island each year.
- Sligo is Yeats country and there are a number of guided tours inspired by the works of the poet in the fantastic countryside of the region.
