Located in Southern Italy at the confluence of two historic rivers, Cosenza is home to some of the best opera, transport to the mountains, restaurants and cafes to make the perfect holiday in 2012.
- Visit the open air museum and learn more about Italian art. With a wide range of modern art sculptures, the open air museum presents them in the street for all visitors and locals to see. Many are donated by the American Italian collector Carlo Bilotti and should definitely be seen while visiting Cosenza.
- Dominating the city is the Hohenstaufen Castle, originally built by the Saracens the Castle has since been restored by Fredrick II, the Holy Roman Emperor. He added the octagonal tower to the castle and since then all of the elements of ancient Saracen structure have disappeared.
- Take a trip to the theatre and watch some of the best opera that Cosenza can offer.
- The Church of San Domenico combines Renaissance and Medieval elements, typical of Italian architecture. Highlights include the rose windows which are defined by 16 tuff columns, a wooden portal with floral motifs and figures of saints and coats of arms. Work by painter A. Granata can be seen inside the church.
- The Cathedral ,like the Hohenstaufen castle, was restored by Fredrick II. A cultural blend between Muslim, Byzantine and elements of Western culture can be seen in what is left today.
- Visit in October to catch the, La Sagra dell’uva del vino, wine festival which takes place in Donnici ,as well as the Festa del Cioccolato, the annual chocolate festival.
- Visit the San Francesco di Paolo to see the tomb of Ottavio Cesare Gaeta. With several paintings to be found inside, the San Francesco di Paola is the perfect destination for art, history and religious appreciators alike while in Consenza.
