Cortina d'Ampezzo is a town and commune in the southern (Dolomitic) Alps and the province of Belluno, Veneto, northern Italy. Located in the heart of the Dolomites in an alpine valley. It is a popular winter sport resort known for its ski-ranges, scenery, accommodations, shops and après-ski scene. It hosted the 1956 Winter Olympics as well as various world cup events and motion pictures.
Cortina d'Ampezzo is an attractive high-altitude town and is popular and well equipped for a full range of mountain activities. In winter the town is a busy skiing destination, with several cable cars and access to many ski runs. In the summer months the town is a good hiking centre for keen walkers, and also for energetic mountain bikers. There are also plenty of excursions using cable cars and buses, which will take you to spectacular viewpoints and mountain restaurants.
There is plenty to do on your holiday to Cortina d’Ampezzo. The town is nice and it hosts many features around it, including the massive summits of the Dolomites. The town's proudest moment was hosting the Winter Olympics in 1956. Photographs and mementoes are dotted all around local streets and businesses. It's worth paying a visit to the Stadio del Ghiaccio (Ice Stadium), built for the Olympics and it’s now open as a public skating rink.
The eighteenth-century parish church (Chiesa parrocchiale) in the heart of town is worth a look. Cortina has three town museums, all housed in one building and there is an outdoor museum with three different locations in the mountains nearby.
Cortina has great shops, which stock everything you could think of. There are many boutiques, mountain clothing shops, supermarkets and a large range of local crafts. There are many restaurants, cafes, hotels and bars and plenty of activities and excursions to fill your holiday with.
