Rome Airport Ciampino
Ciampino Airport in Italian is called Aeroporto di Roma-Ciampino. It was originally opened as a military airport, and was opened for civilian use to relieve the Leonardo da Vinci (Fiumicino) airport and to offer space for budget companies and charter flights.
A single terminal facility, Rome Campion Airport (CIA) is relatively small, however despite its size it is still a busy facility, handling flights operated by a large number of airlines to an expanding number of international cities, as well as destinations in Italy.
Ciampino Airport is situated approximately 15 km/9 miles southeast from the centre of Rome, close to Frattocchie, Marino, Santa Maria delle Mole and the Greater Ring Road motorway. Serving some five million-plus passengers on a yearly basis, Rome's Ciampino is actually amongst Italy's busiest and most important airport, and has recently been expanded to cope with increased traffic created by its budget, 'no-frills' airlines.
Buses and trains offer connections with central Rome, linking the Ciampino Railway Station and Termini Railway Station (Stazione Termini), the Vatican area, the religious district of Capitolina, and the Viminale area, where a number of grand palaces reside.
Ciampino Airport is Rome's oldest airport, dating back to 1916, when it began its long life as a military airbase. Used by many enormous airships for daily flights, including a famous journey to the North Pole, Ciampino Airport grew in stature during the thirties.
As Italy's capital city, Rome is a thriving tourist and business centre, attracting millions of visitors from Europe and all over the world. Sited within the Lazio region, the allure of the city is quite undeniable - history and fine architecture combine with a modern cosmopolitan ambience to offer one of Europe's most exciting capitals.
