Agrigento Holiday Information
On the south coast of Sicily is the city of Agrigento or Girgenti which was the site of Akragras, an ancient Greek city.
Southern Agrigento is home to a large excavated area known as the Valley of the Temples, which comprises of seven Doric style Greek temples which have been partially restored, with the valley listed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site. The temples were constructed between the 6th and 5th centuries BC in Akragras (Agrigento) with the best preserved being attributed to the goddesses Juno and Concordia (Concord). Agrigento’s Archaeological Museum in the city houses many of the finds that have been discovered in the valley and the surrounding area.
In Agrigento and worth a visit, is the large Gothic cathedral and 13th century Church of San Nicola. Travelling around Agrigento is easy by foot through the medieval quarter, and buses run through the city to the museum and Valle dei Templi (Valley of the Temples).
Agrigento’s old centre is where you will find many small shops on Via Atena and uphill on Via Duomo, the cathedral with spectacular views across the valley.

There are a number of long sandy beaches between Agrigento and Sciacca with the favoured being The Turkish Stairs near Realmente, Tore Salsa which extends to the Torre Salsa World Wildlife Federations reserve, and Eracelea Minoa which is a 5 km stretch of beach protected by dunes and a forest.
