The town of Giardini Naxos has roots going back to ancient times dating back from 734 BC and was considered important in religious matters due to being the base of the Temple of Apollo Archegetes. Up until the 1970s the town was not much more than a quiet fishing village typically found along the coast, however the increase in tourist interest since then has led the town to developing a more commercial side. Along the seafront you can find a great selection of hotels, pubs, restaurants and pizzerias; there is also plenty to do with a beautiful beach that becomes quiet crowded in July/August as a result of the festival, with other activities including shops, discos, karaoke bars and see traditional entertainment such as strolling musicians. Nearby you might like to visit the pretty town of Taormina located in the hills easily accessibly by bus or car or explore the famous archaeological site within Giardini Naxos itself.
