You'll Love Marsala if...

  • You have a penchant for wine drinking. One of Italy's most famous wine destinations, here you can enjoy the sweet grapes of the region amid splendid surrounds. Head to any of the town’s enoteches who offer Marsala wine tasting sessions, as well as places to purchase bottles at great prices.

Top Attractions in Marsala

  • The heart of Marsala is the piazza in front of the town's Duomo, which is dedicated to St. Thomas a Becket. This square, called Piazza della Repubblica or Piazza Loggia, is a pleasant place for a promenade or refreshments at the cafe opposite the cathedral.
  • Museo Archeologico is not to be missed as this is home to the Punic Ship which has helped piece together the local area’s history and life at sea, a holiday must if you’re keen to find out about local culture and heritage.
  • The largest church in Marsala is Chiesa Madre, in the Piazza della Repubblica. Originally constructed during the Norman occupation, it was massively rebuilt in the 1700s and well worth a visit if you want to see a collection of eight Flemish tapestries, made in Brussels between 1530 and 1550.

Marsala Highlights

  • Go and watch Marsala grapes get crushed and turned into the town's "sweet nectar," Marsala wine, head for the Cantine Florio, Lungomare Via Florio which offers free guided tours of the winery.
  • Marsala fans also flock to Cantina Sperimentale Istituto Regionale della Vite e del Vino, open throughout the week, where you are allowed to sample a number of experimental wines.
  • Take an excursion to the archaeological island of Mozia and visit the picturesque salt pans which line the shore between Marsala and Trapani. As well as the museum on Mozia, there is also a museum of salt extraction on the mainland nearby, housed in one of the windmills which dot the shoreline. The neighbouring seaside town Mazara del Vallo is worth a visit to see one of the finest surviving bronze statues of the antiquity.
