The town of Mazara del Vallo has a history dating back from the 9th century BC and features many ancient monuments and sights, most noticeable the Dancing Satyr a bronze statue dating back several centuries discovered in 1998 under the sea. There are also important historical buildings such as the Roman Arc, which are the ruins of an old Norman castle dating back from 1073, and several old churches including the Royal Saint Nicholas, a rare example of Norman architecture from the 12th century.
Today the city is widely known as one of the most important fishing centres in Italy and the recent interest of tourist activity have led to the town developing into a more cosmopolitan tourist centre with a great variety of local shops, charming restaurants and bars to explore.
