San Gimignano at a Glance

As you approach San Gimignano you will quickly understand its popularity: the fourteen medieval towers give it an air of magnificence. Small enough to explore on foot, yet bursting with history and art, San Gimignano is the perfect holiday to Tuscany.

Ideal for...

  • San Gimignano is a great spot for families to base their Tuscan adventure.
  • Wine lovers, do not leave without tasting the local wine: Vernaccia di San Gimignano.
  • Those interested in renaissance art.

Top Attractions in San Gimignano

  • The nearest little San Gimignano has to a cathedral is the Collegiata in the Piazza del Duomo. Small yet wonderful, this ‘cathedral’ contains a series of frescoes depicting Old and New Testament subjects that are well worth a look.
  • The Piazza is surrounded by the 1000-year-old towers which dot the town. There were originally 72, but now only 14 stand. Although plainly decorated, their height is still a fascination.
  • The San Gimignano1300 Museum is home to a huge model reconstruction of San Gimignano as it existed 700 years ago, and features 800 handcrafted sculptures, street scenes and figurines. A fantastic opportunity to learn about the architectural, social and historical aspects of Tuscany in the middle ages.
  • There are several places in San Gimignano in which to see examples of Tuscan renaissance art. The Pinacoteca Civica is a small but splendid gallery in Palazzo Pubblico. The Church of Sant’Agostino boasts a set of frescoes by Benozzo Gozzoli illustrating the life of St Augustine.
  • Pick up local souvenirs and delicious fresh foods for an afternoon picnic at the weekly thursday market in the Piazza della Cisterna.
  • For views of the surrounding countryside climb up onto Rocca, simply known as ‘big rock’ in the south west of the town. Alternatively wander the footpath which circles San Gimignano, an often quiet route.
  • In July and August San Gimignano is home to the Dento e Fuori le Mura – Dalla Citta per la Citta, or more simply the summer music festival! Go along to see performances of opera, poetry, theatre, ballet, classical music and movie screenings.
