Venice Holiday Information

One of the most beautiful and romantic cities in the world, the fascinating north Italian city of Venice is made up of over 100 small islands along the Adriatic coast and is famed for its 150 canals which are linked by hundreds of bridges including the famous Rialto Bridge (Ponte di Rialto).

Transport through the old area of Venice is either by foot or on the water and the Venetian gondolas are the authentic travel modes when staying on a city break in Venice; however, there are a number of faster and cheaper water buses and taxis available in Venice too.

Shoppers should head to the area between St Mark’s Square, the Rialto Bridge and station for a superb selection of leather goods, clothes and lace. In Venice, top designer retailers like Armani, Gucci, Prada, Missoni, Versace and Valentino can be found in the San Marco area.

From dining and eating at the world famous Harry’s Bar to dancing at The El Souk or Acropolis, there is a great choice of evening entertainment. The choice of restaurants, bars, clubs and theatres is endless, and a romantic stroll along the beautifully lit canals is a must as the sun goes down.

There is a huge choice of accommodation in Venice ranging from cheap budget hotel bed accommodation to luxury hotels, which are spread amongst the six districts of Venice : San Polo, Cannaregio, San Marco, Dorsoduro, Santa Croce and Castello.

Explore Venice

The wealth of well preserved sites in Venice means that there can’t possibly be a dull moment!

Venice’s main square is the bustling Piazza San Marco or St Mark’s Square; a land mark originating from the 9th century in front of St Mark’s Basilica. St Mark’s Square is the best location to start a tour of Venice and the perfect picture moment. St Mark’s Clock tower, St Mark’s Campanile as well as the Biblioteca Marciana and the Doge’s Palace are set around Venice’s St Mark’s Square, at the start of the Grand Canal, as well as a host of small stores and cafes.

Campo San Polo is the second largest square in Venice and is where bullfights took place but where now you are more likely to visit when the popular Venice Carnival is on or the Venice Film Festival.

Retrace the last steps of the Italian convicts as you walk across Venice’s Bridge of Sighs (Ponte dei Sospiri) or visit the Museum of Modern Art or the Peggy Guggenheim Museum. Why not head to the island of Murano and watch the famous exported Venetian glass being blown the glass into beautiful shapes.
