Surfing is great fun and once you’ve tried it you’ll be hooked. Lanzarote is one of the best places to surf in Europe, whether you’re learning to surf or you have already caught the bug. Famara in the north of the island is the ‘Hawaii of Lanzarote’ and the main destination for riding the waves, whatever your ability.

We have teamed up with one of the best schools on the island to give you all the information you could possibly need about surfing in Lanzarote, whether you are a beginner or a pro.

Surfing for Beginners

The best surf schools are in the north of the island, but as the main tourist resorts are in the south, the majority of surf schools offer pick-ups included in the price of the lesson from resorts like Costa Teguise and Puerto del Carmen. Here you will find a good mix of restaurants and nightlife for when the sun goes down and the surfing finished for the day.

Before you go surfing it is important to familiarise yourself with the beach safety advice below that will keep you safe.

  • Always buddy up – let your friends know whenever you go in or out of the water
  • The international signal for help is one arm straight out of the water being waved side to side, you can always shout too
  • Never go surfing if you do not feel well or have any injuries
  • Look out for signage before you get into the water and take note of any emergency phones on the beach
  • Use the lifeguards’ knowledge – they don’t want to have to get into a dangerous situation, so talk to them beforehand about conditions on the day
  • Remember that beach conditions change everyday
  • The international beach safety flag system can often be interpreted differently and particularly at Famara it doesn’t necessarily mean that you cannot surf. Check with the lifeguards or surf schools to be sure of the meaning

The surf schools and instructors as well as the lifeguards on the beaches, will be more than happy to help you out by telling you the best times of day for rips and tides and which board will best suit you.

We have put together a guide to surfing in Famara so that you get the very best from your surfing holiday in Lanzarote here.

Advanced Surfers

The beaches of Famara are the surfing hot spots of the island. Famara offers a 2km stretch of exposed beach and great surfing conditions year round. Playa de Famara has beach break waves and Caleta de Famara rocky reef waves. The currents are stronger in the afternoons here so head down in the morning for practice waves.

Top Tips

  • Peak surfing season in Lanzarote is November to March
  • 3/2mm Wetsuits are advisable in the winter months
  • In summer months a shorty will be enough
