A bather’s paradise; Porto Santo has a glorious stretch of 9 km of soft golden sand divided into separate beaches. Said to have therapeutic properties, many travel to the Porto Santo beaches to look for relief from rheumatism pain and to aid the recovery of broken bones. Penedo Beach located to the far south east of Porto Santo is the least crowded due to its location and has been awarded the Blue Flag accolade. There is a car park in Porto de Abrigo and a beach restaurant. Fontinha Beach in Porto Santo is 720m long and runs from Cais Velho to near the Hotel Torre Praia. The waters are tepid and this Blue Flag beach is popular with the Madeirans, and offers changing rooms, sunbeds and a restaurant. Whilst facilities are limited at Praia des Pedras Pretas, this sandy beach with its black rocks is popular with those staying nearby. Just 4 km from Porto Santo’s main town of Vila Baleira is Cabeco beach which boasts excellent leisure activities. Contrasting blue seas, golden beaches and ochre rocks draw many to Praia da Calheta; another Blue Flag beach with excellent water conditions.
