Located on the west coast of Madeira, this resort is a seaside town about 30 minutes drive from the island’s capital, Funchal. The beach area at Ribeira Brava has been recently developed for families to enjoy. East of of the town is a small harbour accessed through a rock tunnel east of the sea front, which is popular with swimmers and fisherman. There is a good selection of shops in the area, possibly the best choice outside of Funchal.
In Ribeira Brava there are also a number of supermarkets and you will find unique stores hidden away in buildings that look more like people’s houses! Eateries are plentiful in Ribeira Brava with about 40 restaurants and bars along the coast and in the town offering a whole host of different local dishes. You can’t holiday in Ribeira Brava without taking a famous Levada Walk; set routes are labelled for varying abilities of walkers following the open water collection channels and small canals winding through the mountains.
In the last few years the beach area at Ribeira Brava has been developed with a large jetty stretching out to the sea and a pleasant promenade running parallel with the “new” man made sandy beach and a children’s swimming pool and paddling pool. There is plenty of space to sun bathe around the promenade and a snack bar to enjoy a cooling drink. The waves are generally not strong enough for surfing until the winter, when most head west to Paul Do Mar.
Cheap holidays to Madeira may be booked online 24 hours a day with lowcostholidays.com.

Enotel Baia is a charming hotel that sits looking out over the ocean. As well as enjoying a peaceful environment, it is set against a stunning backdrop of mountains. Guests of the hotel can enjoy activities such as canoeing, deep sea fishing and golf, or they can laze by the beautiful outdoor pool.
Ribeira Brava sits amongst a stunning landscape of mountainsides and valleys, which are ideal for explorers. The town is home to the Sao Bento Church, once a small 15th century chapel and now a parish church. As well as being a quiet beachside destination, the town is also a working fishing port.
You will find a large jetty leading from the town’s beach and into the water. From here you can enjoy some swimming in the ocean, or you can try some water sports if you wish to delve further into the sea. Jet skiing and water skiing are available, or you can take a fishing trip or hire a sail boat.
Being an important fishing port, Ribeira Brava is one of the key locations for the Festival of Saint Peter in the month of June. In celebration of the protector of the fishermen, the town comes alive with a procession of boats decorated with flowers and a century old sword dance.
The town is a charming collection of old Portuguese townhouses that are scattered across its winding streets and alleys. Fans of architecture should seek out the Sao Bento Church, but if you wish to see some more sights, head to the nearby capital of Funchal, where a range of architecture awaits.
