Merida (Merida Yucatan) Holidays

Merida Uncovered

Whether you’re in Merida for a family beach holiday or relaxation with a friend, lowcostholidays.com’s insider tips will keep you in the know.

When is the best time to go:

The weather in Merida is mostly hot and humid. Most of the rain occurs between the months of June and October with short span periods of heavy rains during the afternoon.

Spectacular days out:

In Sotuta de Peon, learn how the great henequen haciendas functioned during the height of their popularity. Going to these haciendas is like going back in time, as you watch the process first hand. The tour is nothing short of fantastic as you ride the rails on a mule-drawn cart, eat in a restaurant that serves very traditional cuisine or swim and cool off in the cenote that can be found on the property. Finish off your visit to Merida with a visit to this extraordinary hacienda.

Hidden Gems:

Whilst on your holidays in Merida, it is without a doubt worthwhile to travel an hour out to visit the fantastic archaeological site of Uxmal, located on an extensive stretch of land near Campeche. Its beauty and incredible architecture is an important part of Mayan cultural heritage. At night, Uxmal comes alive with a Light and Sound show that you shouldn't miss.

How’s the shopping:

Because many people from Merida have an artistic flair there are many small handicraft stores and market stalls in the downtown area, which are a major attraction for tourists.

While shopping in Merida, don't miss out on the chance to take a look at the traditional women's clothing, including a kind of dress called a ''huipil'', and also remember to ask about ''guayaberas'', a really cool, elegant shirt traditionally worn by men in Merida.

Merida also features some large shopping malls, which have an excellent variety of boutiques.

Where can I get a burger:

The food in Merida is one of the most exquisites and unique in Mexico. It is a fusion of Spanish, French and Cuban flavours. The most famous dishes are arecochinita pibil, panuchos and salbutes.

Chilli’s restaurant is very popular and has a great reputation. Juicy cuts of beef and chicken, fresh salads and their famous ribs, make up the extensive menu, which along with the refreshing drinks and very friendly service, ensures diners always leave very well satisfied

Get in with the locals...

Here’s some information for when you’re on your Merida holidays;

Can I drink the water?

The tap water in Merida isn’t safe to drink, so to prevent any illness always drink bottled water.

What’s the 999 number?

If there is an emergency, call 060 or 080.

Shall I pack the sun cream/anorak?

Merida can get very hot, especially in the summer; you should make sure you pack and wear lots of high factor sun creams and sun block for children. Don’t forget to bring a hat to protect your children’s heads too.

Shall I learn the lingo?

A few local phrases can’t hurt whilst on your holidays to Merida.

How do I get around?

To move around in the city and nearby places we recommend taking taxis or rent a car. Taxis are relatively inexpensive and have a well system in place. Renting a car is a good idea because you will most likely want to move around and go to other places.

Do I need to tip?

Yes. It is usual to tip approximately 10-15% of your bill.
